Privacy Policy

Introduction
Uphill Journey, LLC ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose and safeguard your information when you use the recommend.events mobile app and website (together, the "Services").
recommend.events finds tech and AI events in your city and ranks them against the interests you tell us about. Ranking is done by AI models we do not run ourselves, so the section below on AI model providers is the one worth reading closely.
By using our Services, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with our policies and practices, please do not use our Services.

Information We Collect
Information you provide to us
- Account information. The email address you sign in with. Sign-in is handled by Clerk; if you sign in with an Apple ID using Hide My Email, we only ever see the private relay address.
- What you tell us about your taste. The cities and topics you choose, the interests description you write, and the events you mark Going, Interested or Skip, with any reason you add.
- Communications with us. Support requests and feedback you send.
Information collected automatically
- Usage data. Screens opened and actions taken in the app, and when you were last active.
- Technical data. Device type, operating system version, app version and IP address, collected as part of analytics and used for diagnosing crashes and performance problems.
- Notification token. If you turn notifications on, the push token your device issues.
- How you found us. If you arrive from a link carrying campaign parameters, we record that landing address and referrer so we know which channels bring people in.
What we do not collect
We do not collect your precise location, your contacts, your photos, or advertising identifiers, and the app contains no advertising SDKs. We do not sell personal information.
Analytics
We use analytics to understand how the Services are used and to improve them:
- PostHog — product analytics in the app and on the website. Event properties don't include your interests description or your search queries.
- Google Analytics — usage statistics on the website only. The mobile app does not include Google Analytics.
These tools collect information under their own privacy policies: PostHog, Google.
Sharing With AI Model Providers
Ranking your events requires sending what you have told us to AI models that we do not host. The app asks your permission before any of it is sent, and until you agree nothing of yours goes to them. Ranking is what the Services do, so agreeing is required to use them: in the app, declining means you cannot continue; on the website, using the service is your agreement.
What is sent: the cities and topics you choose, your interests description, the events you have marked and any reason you gave, and the public details of the events being ranked (title, host, description, time and place).
What is not sent: your name, your email address, your contacts, your location or any device identifier. The models receive your taste, not your identity.
Who receives it: Google's Gemma model and OpenAI's text-embedding model, reached through OpenRouter, which passes the request to the provider serving that model. Their handling of it is governed by their own terms (Google, OpenAI).
Two things worth being plain about. Some of the model endpoints we use are free tiers, whose providers may retain prompts to improve their own models. And some ranking runs use a model on our own hardware instead, in which case your data reaches no third party at all.
We send this data only to rank your events. We don't use it for advertising, and we don't sell it.
How We Use Your Information
- Ranking your events — the purpose of the Services, described above.
- Sending what you asked for — the daily "event of the day" notification if you turn notifications on, and the weekly email if you subscribe to it.
- Functionality and maintenance — diagnosing and fixing bugs and crashes, and keeping performance acceptable across devices.
- Analytics — understanding which features are used, and which accounts still need a nightly ranking run.
- Security and abuse prevention — enforcing rate limits and usage quotas, and addressing abuse or violations of our terms.
- Legal compliance — complying with legal obligations and enforcing our terms.
Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only in these limited circumstances.
Service providers
| Provider | What it receives | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk | Your email address and sign-in activity | Sign-in and sessions |
| OpenRouter, and through it Google and OpenAI | Your preferences, as described above, once you agree | Ranking your events |
| Resend | Your email address and the message | Sending the newsletter you subscribed to |
| PostHog, Google Analytics | Analytics events and technical data | Product analytics (Google Analytics on the website only) |
| Expo, Google Firebase Cloud Messaging | Your device push token and the notification text | Delivering notifications |
| Apify, ScrapingFish, Mapbox, weather.gov | Public event pages, event locations and coordinates — nothing about you | Collecting, placing and forecasting for events |
These providers have access only to the information necessary to perform their functions and are obliged to keep it confidential.
Legal requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law or in response to legal process (subpoenas, court orders), government or regulatory requests, or the need to protect our rights, property or safety, or to investigate potential violations of our terms.
Internal access
Only a limited number of authorized people have access to user data, on a need-to-know basis and subject to confidentiality obligations.
Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete information
- Delete your personal information (subject to the exceptions below)
- Opt out of certain collection and processing
- Portability — receive a copy of your data in a portable format
- Object to certain processing of your information
To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity first, to protect against unauthorized access.
Deleting your account
You can do this yourself, in the app: Settings → Danger zone → Delete account. That destroys your sign-in, so you cannot sign back in, and deletes your settings, your interests description, your event scores and your notification tokens. Your email address is replaced with a one-way fingerprint that cannot be turned back into the address; we keep it so that free-trial limits carry over if you sign up again. The record that an event was marked stays, with nothing personal attached to it.
Opting out of analytics
You can limit analytics collection through your device settings (Limit Ad Tracking on iOS, Opt out of Ads Personalization on Android) and your browser settings on the website.
AI ranking cannot be switched off separately, because it is the service itself. If you no longer want your preferences sent to the model providers, delete your account — see above — and they stop being sent.
Data Retention
We keep your account information for as long as your account exists. Event scores are replaced by each nightly ranking run. Analytics events are retained for up to 12 months. When information is no longer needed, we delete or anonymize it. We may retain limited information where necessary for security, abuse prevention and legal compliance, including after an account is deleted.
Data Security
We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls and authentication, and regular review of our security. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's Privacy
Our Services are for professional event discovery and are not intended for children under 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent where you live). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we learn that we have, we will delete it promptly.
International Data Transfers
Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than the one you live in, which may have different data protection laws. By using our Services you consent to such transfers. We take appropriate safeguards to keep your information protected.
California Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you the right to know what personal information is collected, to know whether it is sold or shared, to opt out of its sale, to have it deleted, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. We do not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA.
Other U.S. State Privacy Rights
Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and other states with comprehensive privacy laws may have additional rights, which may include access, correction, deletion, portability, and opting out of targeted advertising, sale of personal information or profiling. Which rights apply depends on your state. To exercise them, email [email protected].
European Privacy Rights
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) listed under "Your Privacy Rights" above. Our legal bases for processing are your consent, performance of a contract, our legitimate interests, and compliance with legal obligations.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will note material changes by posting the new policy here, updating the "Last Updated" date, and notifying you where the law requires it. Continued use of the Services after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
Third-Party Links
The Services link to event pages and other third-party sites, whose privacy practices are their own. We encourage you to read their policies.
