media theory reading circle
- WHO IT IS FOR: Intellectuals, students, and curious minds in San Francisco interested in the intersection of technology, sociology, and philosophy.
- WHAT IT IS ABOUT: A deep dive into media theory and Science and Technology Studies (STS) to examine how technology shapes human society and agency.
- FORMAT: A recurring reading and discussion circle focused on collaborative analysis of seminal texts.
Join us in San Francisco for a media theory reading circle dedicated to exploring the politics, sociology, and anthropology of technology. Using a Science and Technology Studies (STS) lens, we examine how the tools we create influence our epistemologies and the structures of our society.
Our curriculum spans a wide range of influential thinkers, including Neil Postman, Jean Baudrillard, Guy Debord, and Marshall McLuhan. We will tackle foundational concepts such as the society of the spectacle, simulacra, and the neoliberal technological paradigm to better understand the interplay between big science and human agency.
For our upcoming session on September 13, we will be discussing the first three chapters of Neil Postman's 'Amusing Ourselves to Death,' focusing on the medium as a metaphor and the history of typographic America. Whether you are a seasoned scholar or new to media theory, we welcome your perspective and any suggestions for future readings.
