media theory reading circle
- WHO IT IS FOR: Intellectuals, students, and curious minds in San Francisco interested in sociology, technology, and media theory.
- WHAT IT IS ABOUT: An exploration of the politics and anthropology of technology through the lens of Science and Technology Studies (STS).
- FORMAT: A recurring reading and discussion circle focused on analyzing seminal texts.
Join a community of thinkers in San Francisco for a deep dive into media theory and the sociology of technology. This reading circle utilizes a Science and Technology Studies (STS) framework to examine how media shapes human agency, society, and our understanding of reality.
Our current curriculum focuses on Neil Postman's influential work, 'Amusing Ourselves to Death,' exploring the transition from a typographic society to an electronic one. We will analyze the medium as a metaphor and discuss how media acts as a form of epistemology.
Beyond Postman, the circle explores a wide range of critical theorists including Jean Baudrillard, Guy Debord, and Marshall McLuhan. From the 'Society of the Spectacle' to the 'Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,' we welcome diverse viewpoints and new text suggestions to expand our collective understanding of the technological paradigm.
